Meet Bryant’s elected leadership — the officials entrusted by voters to guide the City’s direction, ensure responsible governance, and uphold the values of our community. This includes the Mayor, who serves as the City’s chief executive and oversees daily operations; the City Clerk, responsible for maintaining official records and supporting Council proceedings; and the City Attorney, who provides legal counsel and represents the City in legal matters. You’ll also find the City Council members, elected by ward, who work collectively to pass ordinances, approve budgets, and shape policies that impact neighborhoods across Bryant. Together, these leaders are committed to transparency, accountability, and serving the best interests of the citizens of Bryant.

How does the City of Bryant operate?

The City of Bryant is a Mayor-Council form of government. The Mayor-Council form consists of a Mayor elected at-large, who serves as the City's chief administrative officer, and a separately-elected Council (elected by Ward) which serves as the municipality's legislative body. 

How are the Mayor and City Council members elected and how long are their terms?

The Mayor is elected by the voters at-large and serves four-year terms.

City Council members in the City of Bryant are elected by voters within their specific ward during regular (nonpartisan) elections. Each ward has two positions, and residents vote for the candidate representing their area. They serve two-year terms. 

What are the duties of the Mayor?

The Mayor has several duties as the top elected official for the City of Bryant. Some of these duties include: 

  • Executive leadership
    • Overseeing the day-to-day administration of the City
    • Working with department directors to make sure services are running effectively
    • Helping set priorities for how the City carries out Council-approved policies
  • Policy leadership and Council coordination
    • Presiding over City Council meetings
    • Helping guide discussion and keeping meetings orderly and productive
    • Working with Council members to move policy ideas forward
    • Has tie-breaking authority during a vote
  • Budget and financial oversight
    • Playing a key role in developing the annual budget
    • Working with staff to present funding recommendations to Council
    • Helping ensure resources align with community priorities
  • Public representation
    • Representing the City at public events, regional meetings, and intergovernmental discussions

What are the duties of City Council?

The City Council is the collective decision-making body that sets the direction of the City. Their duties include:

  • Lawmaking and policy
    • Introducing, discussing, and voting on ordinances and resolutions
    • Setting rules and policies that guide how the City operates
    • Approving or denying major initiatives affecting residents and development
  • Budget approval
    • Reviewing and adopting the annual City budget
    • Deciding how public funds are allocated across departments and services
    • Monitoring spending throughout the year
  • Representation of residents
    • Serving as a direct voice for residents in their ward
    • Bringing forward community concerns, requests, and ideas
    • Helping ensure decisions reflect what residents need and value
When and where are City Council meetings held?

City Council meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the month (with a few exceptions: August 18, November 17, December 15) at 6:30 PM at the Boswell Municipal Complex (Bryant City Hall) located at 210 SW 3rd St. 

How do I speak at a City Council meeting?

All City Council meetings have a public comment section that allows residents to speak for three minutes. 

Can I watch or attend meetings online?

All meetings are streamed live on YouTube @bryantarkansas where you can find an archive of public meetings, however participation is limited to viewing, as the City does not monitor the comments during the meeting. 

Are meetings recorded and archived?

What is an ordinance vs. a resolution?

An ordinance is a law; it creates a permanent rule or policy and is enforceable, often carrying penalties if violated. 

A resolution is more like a formal statement; it expresses the Council's position, support, or intent, but doesn't create a binding law. 

How can I get involved with my local government?

The City encourages resident engagement, and all meetings are open to the public. You can view committee/commission vacancies here

Do I have to live in the city to serve?

Yes. 

What does the City spend the most money on?

Within the General Fund, Public Safety, which includes Police, Fire, Courts, and Animal Control. 

How can I request a proclamation or special Mayoral recognition?

The City of Bryant issues proclamations and special Mayoral recognitions to honor and commemorate special observances, highlight community achievements, and convey messages of significance to our city. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The Mayor's Office reserves the right to approve or decline any request and make edits to submitted drafts. 

Requests must be submitted 14 days in advance of the proclamation/recognition date. If less than 14 days' notice is given, the Mayor's Office reserves the right to decline. 

Please email your request with a sample proclamation text and/or specific relevant details that you would like to be included in the proclamation or special Mayoral recognition, including the date/time you would like to have the Mayor in attendance. Please note, proclamations will not be issued for: 

  • Campaigns or events contrary to city policy or values
  • Political or commercial endorsements
  • Issues pertaining to legislative or ballot proceedings
  • Similar or duplicate requests
  • For-profit causes
